WARD 2 — Sault Ste. Marie

Judy Hupponen

Your Ward 2 Neighbor, Your Voice on City Council

Experienced leadership you can trust. A proven voice for our community.

Meet Judy

A lifelong Ward 2 resident with the experience, dedication, and passion to serve our community at City Hall.

Judy Hupponen

Born, raised and now proudly retired in Ward 2.

Judy Hupponen has officially announced her candidacy for City Council representing Ward 2 in the upcoming municipal election. Running under the banner "Your Ward 2 Neighbor, Your Voice on City Council," Hupponen brings deep roots, leadership experience, and a lifelong commitment to her community.

For decades, she has served the local community as a co-owner and a manager in the retail travel industry, operating businesses located directly within the ward.

"I don't just study this ward; I live it every single day. I have watched our neighborhood evolve over the years, and while we have made positive strides, there is still more that can be done. As a neighbor representing neighbors, I'm ready to bring our community's everyday voice to City Hall."

Hupponen has a proven track record of delivering significant funds to the community. Combining her travel industry background with a passion for service, she initiated the highly successful Sault North Rotary "Trip of the Month" fundraiser, generating hundreds of thousands of dollars for local charities. Additionally, she launched the "Around the World in 30 Days" fundraiser in direct partnership with the Sault Area Hospital to purchase critical, lifesaving medical equipment. Both initiatives continue to actively raise funds today.

Beyond fundraising, Hupponen brings crucial governance and policy experience to the table, having served on City Council from 2014 to 2018 and on the District Social Services Administration Board (DSSAB).

My Platform

Three pillars to build a safer, more affordable community for Ward 2.

🤝

Leading a Strategy for Our Seniors: Enhancing Care and Keeping Taxes Low

Enhancing care for our seniors while keeping property taxes low is my top priority. With more than 41% of Sault Ste. Marie's population expected to reach age 60 by 2028, senior care and affordability must be a municipal priority. Currently, the city lacks a formal, stand-alone framework to address this shift. I will lead the development of a comprehensive Age-Friendly Strategy to guarantee safe, active, and socially connected living for our aging demographic.

🛡️

Public Safety & Community Well-Being

Under the Community Safety and Policing Act, all municipalities are required to develop and adopt a Community Safety and Well-being Plan. I will review the latest developments on the CSWB plan to verify milestones have been reached. I will also ensure traffic calming measures, sidewalk accessibility, and neighborhood road repairs are fully aligned with making Ward 2 safer for pedestrians, seniors, and drivers alike.

💚

Mental Health & Substance Use Support

While the province holds the healthcare strings, our city council holds the front-line reality. I will not sit back and accept underfunding. I will use city data to aggressively lobby our provincial representatives and prove that investing in addiction and mental health now saves taxpayer dollars on emergency services later.

“

I'm very excited about the opportunity of seeking election for a seat on City Council. It would be an honour and a privilege to represent the ward in which I have spent most of my life. I hope to earn your support and your vote on October 26, 2026. I always welcome input from Ward 2 residents.
